Fork Testing: Is He a Lefty or a Righty?

My mom was left-handed up until the age of six, where at that point her first grade teacher forbade her from writing with he left hand, and instead force her to use her right. Apparently in the 1960’s if you weren’t right, you were wrong.I’m one of four sisters, and out of the bunch of us, I’m the only left-handed one. My husband comes from a family of 5 kids, baby shoes, all of which are right-handed.And even though it’s a righty-right world (roughly 12% of men and 10% of women are left-handed),baby care, I’ve secretly hoped that one of my children would be left-handed just like me. Why? Oh, I don’t know. Maybe so I would have someone to sit next to at the dinner table that I didn’t knock elbows with.AdvertisementSo far, I’ve struck out 3 times. I have four kids, and I’m fairly certain the three older ones are right-handed. But baby Paul? The verdict is still out on him. (please be lefty, please be a lefty, please be a lefty…)A few days ago, I was out running errands when my babysitter texted me this photo of baby Paul eating lunch. His new thing right now is to eat everything with a fork, which is both adorable and a wee bit frustrating. It’s funny, because he oftentimes “stabs” his food with his right, but then switches the fork to his left to bring it up to his mouth. But nine times out of ten, he’ll pick up his fork with his right.Because of this unscientific fork observing and testing I’ve been doing, I think he’s leaning to the right…So what’s it going to be baby Paul? Want to be like your awesome southpaw of a momma? Or instead join the rest of the world in with their boring right-handedness?If I was a gambling lady, I would bet on right. Even though I so desperately want a little left-handed buddy. Or better yet, baby bedding, maybe he’ll grow up to have super-hero powers and be ambidextrous! How about you? What age was your toddler when you started to see a hand preference?
